Geography
Baja California covers 71,450 km² of the northern half of the Baja California peninsula, from the United States border at 32°32′ N down to the 28th parallel. It is 12th among the states by area and 11th by population, with 3,769,020 people at the 2020 census — but almost all of them live in a narrow strip near the border, and the centre of the state is empty desert.
A granite spine runs down the middle. The Sierra de Juárez, with the pine forest and meadow of the Constitución de 1857 national park, gives way south to the Sierra de San Pedro Mártir, which carries Picacho del Diablo at 3,096 m, the highest summit on the whole peninsula, and Mexico's national observatory at 2,800 m. West of the sierra the Pacific slope has a Mediterranean climate: cool fog, winter rain, and the vineyards of the Valle de Guadalupe inland from Ensenada, which produce most of Mexico's wine. East of the sierra the land drops into the Desierto de San Felipe and the Laguna Salada basin, part of which lies about 10 m below sea level.
The eastern boundary is the Colorado River and the Gulf of California. The river arrives at the border already largely used up by American irrigation, and what remains waters the Mexicali Valley, a grid of canals growing wheat, cotton and green onions on the delta. Offshore, Isla Guadalupe lies 260 km out in the Pacific and is the state's outpost for great white sharks and elephant seals; Isla Cedros and the Bahía de los Ángeles islands sit closer in.

Those six municipalities were the whole state at the 2020 census; a seventh, San Felipe, was separated from Mexicali afterwards, giving Baja California seven municipalities today. Tijuana, Rosarito and Tecate form one metropolitan area of about 2.2 million people, the sixth-largest in Mexico.
Neighbouring states
Baja California has only two Mexican neighbours: Baja California Sur to the south, along the straight line of the 28th parallel, and Sonora to the east, where the two states meet across the lower Colorado River near San Luis Río Colorado. Everything else is water or the international line. The 240 km border with the United States runs from the Pacific at Playas de Tijuana to the Colorado River, facing California for most of its length and Arizona at the eastern end; the US–Mexico border map shows the crossings. The state belongs to the Baja California Peninsula.
Getting there
Tijuana International (TIJ) is the main airport and the busiest in northern Mexico, with a footbridge, the Cross Border Xpress, that lets ticketed passengers walk across the border from San Diego directly into the terminal. Mexicali (MXL) has domestic flights to Mexico City, Guadalajara and the Pacific coast; Ensenada (ESE) and San Felipe (SFH) handle light traffic only. The airports map lists the codes.
Federal Highway 1, the Transpeninsular, starts at the Tijuana border fence and runs 1,700 km to Cabo San Lucas; Highway 1D is the fast toll road along the cliffs from Tijuana to Ensenada. Federal Highway 2 follows the border east through Tecate and Mexicali into Sonora, and Highway 5 links Mexicali to San Felipe and now continues to Highway 1 at Chapala junction.
