Layout of Mexicali
Mexicali is built against the international line itself, with Calexico, California immediately on the other side of the fence. Two crossings serve the city. Calexico West sits at the top of Avenida Cristóbal Colón in the old downtown and handles pedestrians and cars; Calexico East, about 11 km out along the road to the airport, takes the commercial trucks and much of the passenger traffic. The old centre behind the west gate is a low grid of 1920s and 1930s blocks. Its best-known quarter is La Chinesca, the Chinatown laid out by Chinese labourers recruited from 1903 onward to dig the valley irrigation canals; Mexicali still has the largest community of Chinese descent in Mexico, and the district keeps a run of basement premises built to escape the heat.
About 5 km south-east of the border, along Calzada Benito Juárez, the Centro Cívico y Comercial holds the state government offices, the state theatre, the bullring and the baseball stadium. It was laid out in the 1960s deliberately to pull the civic centre away from the fence, and the city has grown south and east around it ever since. Calzada Justo Sierra and Boulevard Lázaro Cárdenas are the main east–west arteries through the newer colonias. General Rodolfo Sánchez Taboada International Airport (MXL) is about 20 km east of the centre off Highway 2. The central de autobuses is in the Centro Cívico district: ABC runs the peninsula services to Tijuana, Ensenada and San Felipe, while Elite and TAP head east into Sonora. ADO, the carrier most visitors know from the south of Mexico, does not operate in this corner of the country.

The valley and the border
Mexicali is the head of the Valle de Mexicali, the agricultural delta that runs east and south to the Colorado River. Water is diverted at the Morelos Dam on the border and distributed by the Canal Alamo and a dense grid of secondary canals, which is why the valley grows wheat, cotton, alfalfa and spring onions in a desert that gets under 80 mm of rain a year. The land falls away as it goes: the city centre stands at roughly 3 m above sea level, and stretches of the valley floor and the Laguna Salada basin to the west lie below it, part of the same continental trough that holds the Salton Sea north of the line. About 30 km south of the city the Cerro Prieto geothermal field taps the same rift, and is one of the largest geothermal power complexes in the world.
The city is the northern anchor of the Baja California Peninsula and the western end of the crossings mapped on the US–Mexico border map. East of San Luis Río Colorado, Highway 2 leaves Baja California for Sonora and the Gran Desierto de Altar; the road map shows how this single route carries almost all overland traffic between the peninsula and the rest of Mexico. Mexicali is also the reason the country's time zone map still has a moving edge, since the Baja California border municipalities change their clocks while the rest of Mexico no longer does. The Colorado, whose flow is largely consumed before it reaches the sea, is traced on the rivers map.
Questions about Mexicali
Where is Mexicali on the map of Mexico?
In the far north-west corner of the country, on the US border directly opposite Calexico, California, at 32.62° N. It is the capital of Baja California and the most northerly state capital in Mexico, about 190 km east of Tijuana across the Sierra de Juárez.
Is Mexicali on the same time as California?
Yes. Mexicali keeps Pacific time (UTC−8) and is one of the few places in Mexico that still changes its clocks: when the national daylight saving law was repealed in October 2022, the six municipalities of Baja California were exempted so that the border would stay in step with California. Clocks move on the US dates, the second Sunday in March and the first Sunday in November.
How far is Mexicali from Tijuana?
About 190 km on Highway 2D, which climbs the Sierra de Juárez at La Rumorosa and takes roughly two and a half hours. The same trip on the US side, Calexico to San Diego on Interstate 8, is a similar distance.
How hot does Mexicali get?
It is among the hottest cities in Mexico. Summer afternoons routinely pass 45 °C in June, July and August, and the annual rainfall is under 80 mm. Winters are mild, with January highs around 22 °C.
Is Mexicali safe to visit?
Baja California is one of the states the US State Department places at Level 3, reconsider travel, citing crime and kidnapping. Mexicali receives far fewer foreign visitors than Tijuana or Ensenada, and the documented risk is concentrated away from the border crossings and the Centro Cívico. Check the current US State Department advisory before travelling.
