Layout of León
León de los Aldama sits at about 1,815 m on the flat western edge of the Bajío, with the Sierra de Lobos rising to the north and the plain running south towards Silao and Irapuato. The city is laid out around the centro histórico, whose core is the Plaza Principal: the Catedral Basílica Metropolitana on one side, the Palacio Municipal on another, and a grid of pedestrianised streets and arcaded blocks around them. The Templo Expiatorio, begun in 1921 and still unfinished, stands a few blocks south-east. Running north from the centre, the Calzada de los Héroes is closed at its head by the Arco de la Calzada, the triumphal arch first raised in 1893 that serves as the city's emblem.
West and south of the cathedral is the Zona Piel, the leather district — several blocks of workshops, wholesalers and shoe and jacket shops, with larger concentrations along Boulevard Adolfo López Mateos, the main east–west artery. The Malecón del Río follows the canalised river through the centre as a linear park and cycle path; the river flooded the city catastrophically in 1888, and the channel dates from the rebuilding that followed. Beyond the old grid, León is a modern industrial city of ring roads and tanneries, with the Poliforum convention centre and the Feria grounds on the eastern side.
Public transport runs on the Optibús, a bus rapid transit system opened in 2003 and one of the first in Mexico. Articulated buses hold the trunk corridors along the main boulevards, with feeder routes and interchange terminals at each end and a single prepaid fare. The Central de Autobuses, east of the centre, handles long-distance coaches to Mexico City, Guadalajara and the border. Del Bajío International (BJX), the airport, is about 20 km south-east near Silao — outside the city entirely, and reached by Highway 45D.

Industry and the surroundings
León is the largest city in Guanajuato and, with 1,721,215 people in the 2020 census, roughly the seventh-largest municipality in Mexico. Its economy has been built on hides since the colonial period: tanneries, shoe factories and leather workshops account for a large share of national footwear output, and the trade sets the calendar. SAPICA, the footwear and leather show, brings buyers to the Poliforum twice a year, and the Feria Estatal de León — the Guanajuato state fair — fills the fairgrounds through January. The Festival Internacional del Globo, a hot-air balloon meeting held each November at the Parque Metropolitano, is the city's other large draw.
The city anchors the western end of the Guanajuato–Silao–León corridor, the industrial spine of El Bajío that runs on Highway 45D. Silao, 35 km south-east, holds a General Motors assembly plant and the Guanajuato Puerto Interior inland port beside BJX airport; Salamanca has a refinery and a Mazda plant, and Celaya and Irapuato add further automotive and food processing. The result is one of the densest manufacturing belts in Mexico, and the reason BJX handles far more traffic than a city of León's size alone would generate.
Day trips are short. Cerro del Cubilete, the hill crowned by the Cristo Rey statue and treated as the geographic centre of Mexico, is about 40 km east by way of Silao. Guanajuato City, a UNESCO World Heritage silver town of tunnels and alleys, is under an hour away, and San Miguel de Allende about 1 h 45.
