Layout of Isla Mujeres
The island is about 8 km long and at its widest only some 650 m across, lying north-east to south-west a short distance off the mainland. Everything is arranged along one axis. The town occupies the northern kilometre: a compact grid of low buildings, the ferry terminal on Avenida Rueda Medina, the market, the main square and the pedestrian stretch of Avenida Hidalgo. Playa Norte is at the northern tip beyond the town, a shallow west- and north-facing beach where the water stays waist-deep a long way out. From the terminal, Avenida Rueda Medina runs the length of the west shore past the naval base and the salt lagoons in the middle of the island — worked for salt in Maya times and into the twentieth century — to Punta Sur at the southern end, where limestone cliffs about 20 m high carry a small Maya temple to Ixchel and a sculpture park. Punta Sur is the easternmost point of Mexico. The east side faces the open Caribbean with rock and surf; the sheltered west side has the beaches, the docks and the road.
There is no airport and no need for a car: golf carts, mopeds and shared taxis do all the moving, and the island can be driven end to end in twenty minutes. The municipality of Isla Mujeres also takes in a mainland strip north of Cancún, so the census count of about 22,900 in 2020 covers more than the island itself.

Beaches, reefs and Isla Contoy
Playa Norte is the beach the island is known for: no reef offshore, a sand bottom and almost no drop, which is unusual on a coast where the shelf normally falls away quickly. Playa Centro and Playa Lancheros run down the west shore, and Garrafón, near the southern tip, is a rocky snorkelling park on the reef edge. Manchones reef, off the south-east, holds part of the Museo Subacuático de Arte, a set of concrete sculptures sunk from 2009 onwards to grow coral and take pressure off the natural reef; the rest of the collection lies off Punta Nizuc at the Cancún end.
The water north-east of the island is where whale sharks feed between June and September, drawn by tuna spawn and plankton; boats work under permit out of Isla Mujeres and Cancún. Isla Contoy, about 30 km north, is an uninhabited national park protecting nesting seabird colonies, and daily visitor numbers are capped. In the middle of the island, the ruined Hacienda Mundaca was built in the nineteenth century by Fermín Mundaca, a trader whose story is the island's founding legend.
The Spanish name dates from 1517, when Francisco Hernández de Córdoba landed and found female clay figurines at a shrine to Ixchel. The island lived on fishing, salt and turtles until the ferry link to Cancún turned it into a day trip in the 1970s. Ferries run at roughly half-hourly intervals through the day from Puerto Juárez and less often from the Hotel Zone, and the last sailings are in the evening, so the island fills with day visitors between mid-morning and late afternoon and empties again. Hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, with September and October the highest-risk months, and the dry season from November to April is the busiest.
